DIGITALISATION, DEMOCRACY AND EUROPE

NARRATIVES OF CHANGE

Change is a fundamental aspect of life and can be experienced in many ways - physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially - depending on the context and the individual‘s perspective. Narratives of change are stories that describe how things are transformed over time, whether it be on an individual or societal scale. These narratives can take many forms, from personal testimonials to epic sagas. They serve to highlight the experiences of individuals and communities in the face of significant challenges, such as social upheaval, personal growth, or political transformation. Narratives of change are essential to understanding how societies and individuals adapt and evolve.

TAKING EUROPE PERSONALLY: YOUNG NARRATIVES OF EUROPE

What does it mean for young people today to be European? How do they look at Europe in the face of multiple crises and what drives them? Based on qualitative interviews, the report ‘Taking Europe Personally: Young Narratives of Europe’, published jointly by the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe and the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft, explores young Europeans' perceptions of Europe, their perspectives on current conflicts and visions for the future of Europe. For this purpose, young volunteers between the ages of 18 and 25 who are active in European political education were interviewed. The report thus offers a deeper insight into the narratives behind young people's ideas about Europe and which determine their actions.

FIVE WORKSHOPS FOR A PROGRESSIVE EUROPEAN CONCISENESS

Download the new workshop manuals of this year's Fellows of the Thinking of Europe Fellowship programme!

In the joint fellowship of the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft with the Schwarzkopf Foundation Young Europe and the Understanding Europe network, five young educators from all over Europe were asked to develop their own workshops aimed at students and dealing with the topics of climate change, social justice and digitalisation in Europe. The motto is: Education by young people, for young people!

With innovative and creative approaches, the workshops encourage young people to critically examine current challenges of change in Europe and to become active themselves. Among other things, young people learn in the workshops how they themselves can advocate for more justice towards people with disabilities, deal with stereotypical narratives about Muslim women, learn more about the diverse career opportunities available in the field of sustainable and ecological transformation, and can digitally and playfully explore how they themselves can contribute to peacebuilding in Europe.

Now the finished workshop manuals are available for download as an Open Educational Resource.

Digital Europe 2030: Data and Democracy

So that we can successfully steer the digital transformation in the EU along a path aligned with democratic values, we need to come up with a shared vision of how we will engage with data in the future. Our new publication "Data and Democracy" aims to find answers to this challenge and develops a proposal on how we should deal with data and the digital transformation in Europe in future. Using the instrument of strategic foresight, the experts systematically designed a desirable future scenario from which concrete options for action were derived.

STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION AND URBANISATION

NOVA CITY INDEX

Leaders internationally have to move faster to address the mounting challenges of climate change, rising inequality, housing insecurity and health inequity. Over two years, a working group of New Urban Progress-fellows representing a diverse range of public, private and civic experiences has studied these issues, speaking with activists, community leaders, elected representatives, and business leaders in cities across Germany and the United States.

The group assessed the actions necessary to respond to urban challenges and foster inclusive urban progress (considering shared challenges on both sides of the Atlantic). They devised a baseline criteria as guidance to determine whether the progressive visions espoused by many influential urban thinkers have been put into practice. Thus, we are excited to introduce the NOVA Cities Index: a blueprint for inNOVAtive cities.

ADDIS ABABA URBAN AGE TASK FORCE

Africa today is the site of numerous transformation processes. The Urban Age Task Force Addis Abbeba appreciates the importance of urban development as a catalytic dynamic to achieve structural transformation and a green economy. It was designed to support city governments to deliver sustainable change ‘on the ground’. In addition to advisory activities and capacity building, the Task Force commissioned and developed a series of four policy briefs and 11 Technical reports under the four themes Housing and Retrofitting, Transport and Mobility Services, Green and Blue Infrastructure and Urban Governance and Planning. The aim of the research is to explore opportunities for compact and well-connected growth in cities that can be delivered through integrated governance.

The Addis Ababa Urban Age Task Force is a partnership between the Addis Ababa City Plan and Development Commission (AACPDC), LSE Cities at the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Mainstreaming sustainable infrastructure finance and innovation in Africa

Strengthening our partnership with Africa is key to foster global and sustainable change. As Africa is a rapidly urbanising continent, its cities require infrastructure to grow and thrive. But how can we mobilize finance to support sustainable urban infrastructure in Africa?

Through an innovative knowledge co-production process in our research collaboration with the African Centre for Cities (ACC) at University of Cape Town, we have developed a series of six position papers that take an overview of infrastructure financing in Africa.

The series aims to point the way towards mobilizing investment to support sustainable urban infrastructure in Africa with experts in the cross-section of urban development and finance. The papers are based on discussions at two roundtable events with representatives from multi-lateral financial institutions, development banks, and academic institutions. The aim was to gain a co-produced understanding of the opportunities to mainstream sustainable infrastructure into the portfolios and projects across the sector.

The series include

Imagining urbanity in the 2020s: Results of the Urban Age Debates

The world of the 2020s is volatile. Global pandemics, the climate crisis, digitalisation or increasing migration are continuously questioning the course of the future. For example, the COVID19 pandemic disrupted the rhythm of life in cities around the world from one day to the next.
This makes the shaping of our cities a daunting task and demands a new pro-active engagement to create futures rather than trying to predict them. With the Urban Age Debates, Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft together with LSE Cities reassessed public spaces, urban economies, mobility, governance, and sustainability to explore trends and design options for a livable, sustainable urban future beyond 2020.

Shaping Cities in an Urban Age

The Urban Age project has investigated urbanisation processes for over a decade, culminating in the book Shaping Cities in an Urban Age, edited by Ricky Burdett and Philipp Rode. This richly illustrated volume brings together authoritative research and fresh insights that explain the complexities of urbanisation. It identifies current trends that are making cities more fragmented, less equitable and environmentally more damaging, and argues powerfully for a more integrated social, environmental and spatial approach that can inform and inspire city-makers that are shaping an increasingly urban world. The book is the third and final instalment in the ‘Endless Cities’ series published by Phaidon. It can be ordered here:

Diplomacy for Change

Report Model United Nations Conference New York 2022

How can we tackle challenges on a global scale effectively and how can consensus be found even in the face of conflicting interests?

Diplomacy is fundamental for peaceful coexistence. The example of the United Nations shows how global conflicts can be defused through dialogue and negotiation and how bridges can be built across seemingly insurmountable borders with the help of the community of states.

In the spirit of diplomacy and international dialogue, the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft supported a student delegation from Witten/Herdecke University to the Model United Nation Conference in New York 2022.
