The phrase "Zeitwende" has been used in many ways in this country since the Russian invasion of Ukraine: it stands for the war as a turning point in recent European history, as a turning point for European security and foreign policy. However, this it has been in the offing since the beginning of the new millennium and is rooted in the fundamental shifts within the global power structure. How can Europe assert itself against the influence of strengthening authoritarian regimes? What answers can the continent of many nations offer to geopolitical challenges?
In the face of swiftly successive crises and conflicts, Europe increasingly finds itself in the sphere of influence of foreign interests. Maintaining economic and political independence is just as much a challenge as the cohesion of European society(ies).

Prof. Dr Daniela Schwarzer is a political scientist and director of the Open Society Foundations for Europe and Eurasia. Her work focuses on transatlantic relations and systemic competition between China and the West.
As a sociologist, Prof Dr Armin Nassehi primarily investigates society and democracy in systems theory against the backdrop of their manifold challenges. Since 1998, he has held a number of professorships and currently teaches and researches at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.
